Guitar Repair & Stringed Instrument Service in Indianapolis

I'm Michael Swanson. My path in lutherie began in the late 1980s, as an apprentice sweeping floors at Brodesser Guitars. Since then, I’ve spent the better part of my life at the bench, working to understand the unique physics and personality of every instrument that comes across it.

The craft is a lifelong study, but more than three decades of hands-on experience have given me the perspective to handle everything from standard electric and acoustic guitar setups to complex structural restorations on vintage instruments.

Whether it’s a pre-war Martin, a modern multi-scale electric bass, or more specialized tools like banjos, sitars, mandolins, fiddles, ukuleles, dulcimers, tiples, and even autoharps, I’m dedicated to the work of making anything plucked or bowed play its best.

Located in the Irvington neighborhood of Indianapolis, serving musicians throughout Central Indiana, including: Avon, Carmel, Fishers, Franklin, Greenfield, New Palestine, and Zionsville.

Evaluations, pick-ups, and drop-offs are by appointment only to ensure each instrument receives the focus it deserves.

Maintenance & Performance

A great instrument should disappear in your hands. I provide precision setups, fret work, and electronics repair designed to maximize playability and tonal balance. From seasonal truss rod adjustments to complete re-fretting, the focus is on technical accuracy and your specific playing style.

Structural Repair & Restoration

Specializing in the preservation of heritage instruments. With nearly 40 years of perspective, I handle complex structural needs including neck resets, bridge replacement or reseating, and bracing stabilization. My approach to vintage restoration is conservative, prioritizing the instrument’s historical integrity and long-term playability.

Bowed, Folk, & World Instruments

The workshop is equipped for more than just the modern guitar. I provide specialized care for upright basses, violins, and cellos, as well as folk and world instruments from across the globe—including mandolins, dulcimers, banjos, ouds, and sitars. Whether it’s a player's setup or a delicate heirloom restoration, I apply the same focused attention to anything plucked, bowed, or strummed

Appraisal & Consignment

Beyond the bench, I provide professional appraisal services for insurance, estate planning, or personal interest. Understanding the history and market value of a vintage or heritage instrument requires a seasoned eye; I offer honest, documented evaluations based on decades of handling rare and significant pieces.

For those looking to pass an instrument on, I offer a curated consignment service. I handle the cleaning, setups, and photography to ensure each piece is presented accurately and plays its best. You can also find a small selection of my current inventory and vetted instruments on my Reverb Shop.
